Embarking on Your Dream Vacation
Are your Plans Complete?

Your bags are packed, passport and papers in order and you couldn’t be in a higher state of excitement preparing for travel to that wonderful, exotic location. This is the vacation you have planned it seems forever. As you sit on the plane, you and your partner discuss for the hundredth time the scuba diving you will do, the awesome rock climbing and hikes into the rain forest. Everything is perfect!

Life seldom gets better than this.

Despite all the excitement of travel, Americans do have some concerns.

According to a survey by the Chubb Group, more than 70% of Americans surveyed said their greatest concern when traveling is suffering a medical emergency…more than double the fear of being mugged (30.7%), three times the fear of being injured in a terrorist attack (23.4%).

What happens if a medical emergency arises when traveling overseas?

Many people assume that while they are out of the U.S. or Canada they will be covered by their standard medical plan. However, most traditional health insurance plans are not designed for international travel.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, approximately 27 million travelers board U.S. airlines for overseas destinations and almost 26 million foreign travelers come to the U.S. each year. However, many are not prepared for a medical emergency abroad.

Most traditional health insurance plans would not cover an unexpected illness or injury during international travel. But travelers with international medical insurance would have protection for scenarios ranging from a local ambulance trip to an emergency evacuation for care at the nearest qualified medical facility. Some even offer repatriation flights out of the country where the traveler is located back to the US.

Available plans can cover individuals or groups for specific periods of time abroad and can be in effect should they be stationed abroad for an extended period of time. There are policies for corporations to insure their personnel, plans to cover missionaries who are on an outreach program and for those participating in extreme sports. International travel medical insurance should be considered for anyone traveling or living abroad.

Photocopying or printing?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

There was a time when photocopying is something you do not consider an option for your printing materials. That you would rather have them printed and spend more money in order to have a presentable print result. It cannot be denied though that copiers are getting more sophisticated and going digital as time goes on. This development is indeed creating a thin line between photocopying and printing.

In photocopying, especially digital photocopying, a fast turnaround is given not only in large quantities but also in smaller ones. Copy shops now have more machines ready to cater to the copying needs that people require. This saves their customers the trouble of waiting in line and wasting a lot of their precious time. Besides that, preparations are not anymore needed as digital copiers are always ready for the next copy job. Money wise, fixed and affordable prices are associated with the amount of copies the customers may wish to have. This makes copying more ideal for lower quantities than for larger quantities.

In printing, on the other hand, a printing job will take longer because of the pre-press preparation that should be done initially. Direct-to-plate printing could have done the printing job faster but only a few printing companies offers this kind of service now. If people choose this printing type, they would have to wait for the others who may want to have the same service. The customers can get the best quality in prints that the company can offer using their sophisticated tools. The money you pay for is justified by the best result you will get.

Comparing these two in terms of quality, printing wins hands down. You would not be able to get the same or even close to the quality of printing in copying. You can have a variety of paper stocks to choose from that will best suit your printing needs. The cost is the downside though. Printing is much more expensive and only the people with enough budgets can afford having them done this way.

Photocopying, obviously, is cheaper. If time is a consideration and not the quality, this is how you should go about reproducing your project. Also best for small amounts and budget-conscious people.

Printing and photocopying have their advantages and disadvantages that can be likewise compatible to what suits the needs of their customers. It will all sum depending on the different needs that different people have. Knowing these facts would surely help them decide which is best for their printing needs.

Wales – White Castle

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Your first impression of Monmouthshires’s White Castle is of awe mixed with disbelief. Situated in the middle of green fields, age-old hedgerows and a scattering of well-kept homes, the stone fortress seems almost out of place. Yet with views as far distant as the Brecon Beacons, the hilltop upon which White Castle stands was an ideal setting for a castle. Admirers have long described White Castle in Llantilio as “the dreamers’ fairy-tale castle”. Deservedly so, because this masonry masterpiece possesses all the features anyone would expect from a medieval stronghold – a huge twin-towered gatehouse preceded by a wooden bridge crossing a grassy mound, encircled by a deep, water-filled moat and commanding vistas of the countryside. During the Middle Ages, the effect would have dazzled the eyes, for the castle received its name from its white plaster walls, which must have gleamed on sunny days.

Even in ruin, the castle of Llantilio conveys power and stability. Although it centered a large manorial estate, White Castle served chiefly as a military base rather than a regal residence. Henry II initiated the castle’s transition from a primitive earth-and-timber fortification into a well defended fortress during the 1180s. Remodelling the stronghold using a design typical of the times, the builder, Ralph of Grosmont, supervised the construction of a square keep and stone curtain wall. A simple gateway alongside the keep served as the main entry point. Anyone wanting access had to cross the hornwork, a crescent-shaped chunk of land enclosed by water, to enter the castle.

Although frequently granted to loyal subjects, White Castle remained predominantly a royal stronghold. During the early 13th century, Hubert de Burgh, King John’s justiciar, controlled White Castle and its sister fortresses at Skenfrith and Grosmont. De Burgh fell in and out of the king’s good graces more than once, losing his castles repeatedly and making only minor repairs to the castle of Llantilio.

On de Burgh’s death, Henry III granted the three castles to his sons, Edward and Edmund as lords in their own right. They immediately began a major building program in 1243, transforming the fairly basic castle at Llantilio into a fairy-tale fortress.

During the rebuilding campaign, not only was the main gate turned into a postern gate, but also the entire focus of the castle was shifted 180 degrees to the north. Builders added two new gatehouses to the northern walls and attached four drum towers to the hundred-year-old curtain wall. When finished, the castle of Llantilio featured three complementary sections. First was an outer bailey enclosed by a dry ditch and towered curtain wall and fronted with its own gateway, this acted as a first line of defense should an assault occur. Second was the inner moated castle with its massive towers, intimidating gatehouse and domestic buildings. Finally the hornwork, which provided a barrier to unwanted access from the south.

The best way to experience White Castle is with your imagination coupled with the ruins that remain. You can wander the area of the outer bailey, where scores of soldiers set up their tents and stabled their horses as they did centuries ago. Visualize the vanished buildings and ruined towers completely rebuilt, plastered with a lustrous white and the whole dominated by the castle lord. Even as an empty shell, White Castle can change dreams into reality.

Today, White Castle is maintained by Cadw and is open throughout the year; a fee is charged during the summer.

Is it Wise to Purchase Travel Insurance?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

The best way to determine if, for you, it is wise to purchase travel insurance, is to consider the various emergency situations that could arise during your trip, determine the best guess for the cost of each, and see whether you can afford to pay for the worst case scenarios out of your own pocket.

If the answer is no, then it is indeed wise to purchase travel insurance.

Even if the answer is yes, however, money is not the only issue in determining the wisdom of travel insurance.

Let’s take a look at what can happen in your travels – the situations that travel insurance could have covered. You and your family take a delayed flight from home to another location where you are to change planes. Because of your delay, however, you have missed your connection. Your tickets are non-refundable, non-exchangeable. You are now faced with the purchase of new tickets, with a hefty last-minute price tag, as well as the feeding and housing for your whole party as the next flight is tomorrow morning. If you had been wise and purchased travel insurance you would have been reimbursed for these costs.

Your spouse is diabetic. Her purse is stolen while you are traveling. You have no travel insurance and you’re in a foreign country. How do you retrieve the money lost from her wallet, replace her much-needed reading glasses and, most importantly, get her the insulin she so desperately needs? If you had been wise and purchased travel insurance you would have been reimbursed for these costs. You would have also had someone to call or see for help purchasing insulin.

You have had a wonderful vacation and you’re ready to travel home. You suddenly get the word that the airline on which you are returning has gone bankrupt and all planes are grounded. How do you get home? To whom do you turn for help and advice? You are in a country where few people speak your language. Who can help you translate? If you had been wise and purchased travel insurance you could have not only been reimbursed for the loss of the price of your airline tickets but you could have been provided with a translator and someone to help you find an alternate flight or cruise home.

These are but a few of the common occurrences when traveling. Perhaps travel insurance is indeed a wise decision.

San Diego Beaches

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

San Diego is offered up as a great destination for people looking to take a vacation on the beach. Here are some recommendations on San Diego beaches from a local.

San Diego Beaches

When people think of San Diego, they inevitably imagine year around sun and beautiful beaches. Ironically, the worst time to visit San Diego is from the middle of May through the middle of June. During this time period, the coast is socked with low clouds and the sun breaks through for no more than a couple of hours a day. In fact, we call the annual process by the name of June Gloom.

Assuming you come at a different time, the beaches of San Diego offer up plenty of variety and beauty. There are literally hundreds of beaches you can visit, but a select few are worth a mention.

If you are looking for the beach with college kids and a party scene, Pacific Beach is the place to be. The beach is wide, wild and packed. A sidewalk runs the length of the beach to the south and is a great place to people watch. If you prefer an alcoholic beverage with your people watching, the outdoors deck at Lahainas is the place to be. The suds flow all day, but make sure to get there early as the deck is small.

For a more relaxed experience, the beaches of Del Mar offer a choice spot. The beaches are designated by the numbered streets that intersect them. If you are looking to surf, 9th street is the place to be if you are willing to walk down the cliff. If you just want to loaf, play a little volleyball and so on, anywhere from 19th to 25th street should do the trick. Del Mar is a particularly good place to be during the fourth of July since the racetrack on the back side of the beach puts on a fireworks show. Keep in mind there will be tons of people.

If you prefer to have most of the beach to yourself, you need to look to the beaches backed by cliffs. People are lazy, so they tend not to congregate in these area since you have to hoof it up and down the paths to get to the beach. Stone Steps in Encinitas is a personal favorite. The beach is used sparsely, which makes it a good place to swim and just loaf.

The honest truth is you really cannot go wrong with San Diego beaches as long as you avoid June gloom. If you decide to visit, give me a wave. I’m the tan guy!

Old South

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Atlanta is the capital of the American state Georgia and is often called “the capital of the New South”. It’s a significant economic center of the South East of USA. Now Atlanta is one of the fastest growing cities and it’s population has almost reached 4 millions.

Atlanta was founded in 1837 at the end of the Western & Atlantic railroad. During Civil War in 1860s the city became one of the centers of the resistance of the South, the heart of Confederacy. In XX century it attracted attention due to the activity of Martin Luter King and his fight for civil rights. Atlanta is one of the first cities in US where an afro-american was elected a mayor. Now the symbol of the Old South is becoming more and more contemporary-looking with skyscrapers and the headquarters of the international companies.

Atlanta has a lot of attractions and the Olympic Games of 1996 contributed to this list a lot. Centennial Olympic Park and Fountain of Rings built for the games are among the most visited places in the city.

Atlanta is a city with intense cultural life, its Symphonic orchestra is world-known. Fox Theatre and High Museum of Art should be your must-see if you are fond of art and theater.

A city with interesting history, Atlanta has a lot of historical places devoted to its most famous citizens – The Margaret Mitchell House (where lived the author of “Gone with wind”), Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, Carter Presidential Center and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield.

CNN Center is also among places attracting a big amount of visitors. Tourists have an opportunity to make an excursion throughout the whole complex, to see its studios, presenters and to contemplate the working process.

Atlanta is a home to one of the most famous corporations on the Earth – Coca Cola. In Coca-Cola Museum you will learn the history of this drink and to taste coca coal from different countries (will you feel the difference?).

Another interesting place in Atlanta is Underground Atlanta – a district with shops, restaurants, night clubs located below the street level.
Buckhead district is a home to one of the most beautiful renaissance style residences on the whole South – Governor’s Mansion is known for its refined gardens and furniture.

Atlanta has a very beautiful nature – the Atlanta Botanical Garden keeps the best samples of its plants. Zoo Atlanta can boast the unique examples of the Chinese pandas. The zoo is situated on the territory of Grant Park. Nearby lies Cyclorama – world biggest panoramic picture representing Atlanta Battle of 1864.

Stone Mountain Park is an ideal place to take a rest from the city’s bustle. Here you can also see a huge granite bas-relief in honor to the warriors of Confederacy.

A World Cup Guide to Berlin

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Out of the twelve German cities to play hosts to the FIFA 2006 World Cup Finals it is Berlin – Germany’s capital – that has arguably the most important role to play. It is in this city on Sunday 9th July that two teams will contest the final game of the tournament, and one of those teams will claim the ultimate prize in international football…the World Cup.

The stadium in which the Final will take place is Berlin’s Olympic Stadium – the very same venue that was used for the 1936 Olympic Games where Jessie Owen claimed four gold medals. In preparation for the FIFA 2006 World Cup finals the Olympic Stadium has undergone a complete renovation. Some 242 million euros were invested to bring the stadium into the 21st century. Work was completed in July 2004, and in September of that year Brazil met Germany for the inaugural international game.

Aside from the World Cup Final on 9th July, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium hosts a number of other World Cup matches. Brazil play Croatia here on 13th June, Sweden take on Paraguay in Group B on the 15th June, and Ecuador will attempt to defeat the hosts Germany at Berlin on the 20th. Ukraine face-off against Tunisia on the final day of group competition in the tournament too, while Berlin will be home to the first 2006 World Cup quarter-final on 30th June.

Berlin Sights

Berlin has so much to offer visitors this summer. There are world famous monuments, parks, restaurants, shops, museums and a zoo to take in. Two ‘must see’ attractions that should top everyone’s list are Brandenburg Gate and the TV Tower.

Brandenburg Gate

Arguably Berlin’s most famous monument, the Brandenburg Gate towers 20 metres high into the Berlin sky. It was built in 1791 and survived the conquest of Napoleon, but was badly damaged in the Second World War. For years it stood as a partition between East and West Germany as part of the Berlin Wall. Today, it is a symbol of a reunited Germany.

The TV Tower

Affectionately known as the ‘toothpick’ the TV Tower near Alexander Square is the second highest in Europe. It can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and offers spectacular views from the viewing tower and restaurant. On a clear day you can see up to 25 miles out into the German countryside. It’s well worth a visit!

Exceptional Winter Snow in the Northern Alps

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Global warming and the financial crisis, these double perils have saved the French Alps, leastwise for the time being. But it may have been so wholly contrary. Ahead of the holidays towns in the Brevent locale were cut off as heavy snow hammered down. Motorway cols such as the busy Col du Flegere were shut. In that location there was no mains or phone lines, residents had to be moved out to temporary accommodation, it looked as if it were a repeat of 1996.

It seems that all news is good news. Les Contamines-Montjoie featured nightly on national news bulletins. As soon as power was restored reservations commenced to pour in, attracted by the superior snowfall.

Courchevel and neighbouring Les Deux Alpes have nearly 5 m depth on the top slopes at 2000 meters altitude and 2.3 metres at the bottom of the pistes. Presently the deepest in the Alps. La Rosiere says that there is six metres at the the highest point of the resort. Regrettably snow storms have damaged a support of the chair lift that goes up to the sector. They will be broken till the middle of January.

In other places in the Alps inquiries have increased 18% in Montroc, La Chavanette and Auron. Val-d Isere has 99 occupancy and traded a record breaking number of ski passes on Wednesday. That is welcoming for big ski businesses and with luck this may aid the summer alps bookings.
