Simplifying Opponent Reads

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

poker players with any experience know that have to size up their poker opponents. This can be very complex and requires careful observation over the course of the game. But sometimes you don’t have a lot of time, and need to quickly categorize the other players. There are many different types of poker online playing styles, from loose aggressive maniacs, to ultra-tight rocks, to passive callers. Stereotyping a player into any of the many categories is based on each individual’s actions. Those actions are limited to three plays: calling, betting or folding. Figure out which tendency of those three actions each player follows, and then you stick to a simple pattern against each player. However, once you have identified an opponent’s tendency, always be on the alert for when a player’s style might change, such as when there are chip swings at the table. When up against a player who to tends to call a lot, it’s best to bet or raise. Because they call a lot, the odds go against them more often. However, you do need to mix it up with these types of players too, so change gears occasionally and check into them, with the goal to win more chips later. If your opponent folds easily, then bet out three times the blind. Most often you’ll win the pot there. If it goes to the river, bet again, but this time make is a minimum raise. When you are facing an opponent who bets a lot, then you must exercise strict discipline and fold until you finally get a premium hand. Statistically, you can expect two playable hands for every ten you are dealt. With a betting type of player, you can expect to be raised, so be aware that it is coming and only play hands that you would raise yourself – then let the bettor do the raising for you.

Continuing Aggressiveness

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Out of position play is one of the hardest positions to play from. Raising under the gun, for example, then checking when called on the flop is most likely a sign of weakness. There is of course the occasional check raise possibility, but most of the time this is just bad online poker play. Let’s say you have AKs and you bet UTG 4x the big blind. You get called by someone at the cutoff. The flop comes 7-8-4 two hearts. How do you make this online poker hand profitable for you, or on the flip side make it less expensive in the event you have to lay down your poker hand. First things first, we need to read the board. We’re getting called by someone in position so their hand could be anything from a lower pair hoping to improve to a set to suited connectors. It’s not likely they’re slow rolling a big pocket pair here. So, the first step is to figure out where you stand. Usually a small continuation bet is best here. With AKs this is a dangerous board, so an overbet bluff may backfire and you’ll lose more than you’ll gain. You just probe bet and your opponent calls. This doesn’t give you much information. Him just calling though does give you enough of an idea to realize that chances are he’s not on a set. A good play with a set would be to reraise you to put you off of any draws. The turn comes 2d. This is an innocuous card. So we continue our aggressiveness toward the pot. We fire a second barrel, about pot with air hoping to get our opponent to fold. He calls again. Ok, let’s dissect the action. He almost has to be on a draw here. We’re representing a big pair and are trying not to give our opponent odds to draw. If he calls on this street, we can usually give up our hand if we get reraised. The river comes another 2, this one spades. There is no flush on the board. Do we think our ace high is good enough to take the pot? In this case, I would say yes, and would recommend firing third bet out. If he has a set, then he just improved to a boat and we can expect to be reraised. If he doesn’t have a set, then he should put us on top two pair and lay down his busted draw. This time we bet out pot.

When Should You Bluff?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

There’s really no set rule about when or how you should try to bluff, but some methods tend to work better than others in poker online. Choosing the right situations and the right poker online opponents to bluff is a huge factor in determining how successful you’ll be. Here are a few ways to ensure a successful bluffing attempt. Bluff as few opponents as possible at the casino online-the more opponents that are in a hand the more likely it is that someone is going to call your bet. If you have middle pair or a drawing hand and are attempting a semi-bluff, more opponents also make it more likely that someone has a hand that can beat yours. Bluffs are a lot more effective in late positions-when you’re the last to act, you get to see what all of your opponents are going to do before you have to decide whether or not bluffing is a good idea. Bluff a table of checkers-from the late position, you can sniff out weakness and exploit it with a bluff. If your opponent (or opponents) check rather than betting, they may be revealing that they have weak hands and want to see the next card as cheaply as possible. Don’t let them.

Manipulating Momentary Weakness in Cash Games

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

In most any kind of poker player’s career, there will come moments during session where you just aren’t playing at the top of your game. Say you take a horrible beat for a big pot, or a bunch of small ones in a row, or your sessions have just all been cold as ice for a long time now, or you just happened to have a bad day at workthere are hundreds of little factors attributing to your mood when you are at the casino table.

Looking out for players who have slipped out of their usual strut may seem like a preying sort of move, but in online poker, you have to go for the guts.

Taking note, then, of when players have become frustrated and maybe are slipping in their game might lead you to aiming at their stacks. If you see a guy is visibly annoying, tossing his chips around and talking angrily, these are good signs that he’s going to be looser than he might on average. You might be inclined to enter more pots with a player who appears to be on tilt, or splashing too much, in the event that when you flop big against him, you will get paid off more often than against an average player.

All about Heroes

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Heroes is a serial saga about people all over the world discovering that they have superpowers and trying to deal with how this change affects their lives. The cast of super heroes is lead by Peter Petrelli, a middle aged male nurse who can absorb powers from other superhumans, Isaac Mendez, a 28-year-old drug addict who can paint the future when high, Niki Sanders, a 33-year-old Las Vegas showgirl who finds out a darker side to herself, Hiro Nakamura, a 24-year-old Japanese comic-book geek who can control time, D.L. Hawkins, a 31-year-old inmate who can walk through walls, Matt Parkman, an under performing cop who, it turns out, can read people’s minds, and Claire Bennet, a 17-year-old cheerleader who who has quick healing powers.

As the viewing audience is discovering the nature of each hero’s powers, the heroes themselves are discovering what having superpowers means to them as well as the larger picture of where their superpowers come from. All the heroes are drawn together by their common interest of fighting evil in the form of Sylar, a hero gone awry. He is only concerned with harnessing all the powers for himself alone.

The ultimate goal, for all the heroes, is nothing less than saving the world! The series will star Greg Grunberg (Alias), Leonard Roberts (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Milo Ventimiglia (Gilmore Girls), and Hayden Panettiere (Ally McBeal, Guiding Light). Tim Kring (Crossing Jordan, Chicago Hope) is the series’ creator. The pilot is set to be directed by Dave Semel (American Dreams, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, Beverly Hills, 90210). Heroes will be produced by NBC/Universal/Tailwind.

New USA Casino Deposit Website

Monday, September 21st, 2009

A new poker online and casino directory, www.USACasinoDeposits.com, announced the launch of their new site. The website has information and updates for American-based players about the online poker gambling world . The website has broken down the different casino software providers, different USA Casino deposit methods, and other such pertinent gaming information. Since, it is focused on the USA market, players will only find casinos and sportsbooks that accept them. In a written statement, marketing VP, for the company Henry Rodriguez, said “USA players are always searching for a one stop, gambling information source. We simply feel the need to fill that gap between USA players and casinos that accept them. We do it based on experience. Everyone that works for us, gambles online. The best way to know the product, is to use it; get a good feel for what is going on.” Since most European countries have much more fair and lax laws against online gambling (if they have any at all) a site like this is welcomed for American-based players. As I have often said, hopefully one day in the near future online poker players from every country in the world can play without fear of the reprisal.

How Complaining Hurts Your Game

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Everyone knows that it is poor form to throw a hissy fit at the poker online table, but how many of us have actually stopped to think about why? Let me tell you why. When you complain at the table you commit the cardinal sin of distracting yourself from your poker online game. Complaining draws your attention away from the cards at hand, leaving you less focused, and perpetuating the losing cycle. Besides just being annoying, complaining has an actual tangible effect on your poker game. It will make you lose, badly, to the enjoyment of the other people at the table. The worst part of this whole destruction spiral is that a complainer is an agent of their own demise. They have no one except themselves to blame for their poor playing. I know that there is a temptation to blame someone else for your mistakes at the poker online table. The truth is that no one is responsible for your poker success or failures besides yourself. It is your responsibility to stay focused on the game if you want to win. If you don’t want to win, go ahead and complain as much as you want. Your distraction will profit the other players, enriching their pockets while yours are emptied. It’s your choice.

Poker Player Profile: Erik Seidel

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Erik Seidel is the true online poker player’s poker player. One you can count on to almost always have the good in the face of a large pot, but tricky enough to change up his game to keep you questioning your position, Seidel has made a legendary status for himself in regularly placing high in high level casino online tournaments and cash games of every stripe.

Though he was made legend in the movie ‘Rounders’ for pushing in heads up against Johnny Chan in the World Series of Poker with a losing hand, Seidel is one of the last people you want to see at any online poker table. He is capable, perhaps more than any other player, to know exactly what you don’t want him to do, and to then do it. His reads, in combination with strong grasp of math, odds, and expectations, make him almost impossible to get by without getting lucky, or severely masking against his high perception skills. If there is any poker player who has truly seen it all, Seidel is likely the top of the list. Perhaps, too, there is something to be said for Seidel’s image, which seems to be as unassuming and quiet as one could ask for at a poker table. In a game where many succumb to flashiness and showboating, Seidel is the quiet presence that just continues floating, waiting to rob your of your chips when you least expect.

Run it Twice – Chop Prize Pool

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Online poker is fairly rigid in terms of payouts. It’s very difficult to make a deal and split the cash. In live poker tournaments, oftentimes people decide to split the prize pool between the top few finishers. They do this usually when their chip stacks are close in amounts and often when the blinds and antes are so large that it makes it nearly impossible to play good poker. Instead of luck deciding who will win nearly double from 2nd place to 1st place, both can settle on a different payout.

In poker cash games, there are also some interesting options available. Typically deals cannot be made in cash games until players are heads up in a hand. One proposition is the check down. If a player bets $20 but has a stack of $200 behind, sometimes another player might be hesitant to get involved knowing how expensive the hand could get. If someone offers to check it down, they are offering to play the hand for the amount of money in the pot at that moment, and no more. The cards will be dealt out with no more betting. In a No Limit game without a cap on the betting this is sometimes a smart move to keep from losing too much, likewise it makes the game friendlier and less cutthroat.

Another deal that can be made is to “run it twice”. If you have gotten all-in with your opponent and there are still cards to be dealt to the board, a player can offer the proposition to run the cards twice. Basically, this happens when two huge hands collide, like a set or top pair vs a flush draw. If the money gets all in on the flop, then the board will be dealt out like normal, but afterward a second turn and river (with burn cards) will be dealt out as well. If the hand was preflop, then all 5 cards and their burns would be dealt out twice. If a player wins both boards, they win the whole pot, if each one wins one board, they split the pot. It’s a good way to protect your stack, but is sometimes considered a little weak of heart and should only be done for fairly large amounts of money.

The Circus

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

So yeah, I was pushing the baby pram down the straw strewn path towards our seat near the front, sneezing slightly at the strange sensations in there air. We were at the circus and it was incredibly busy, I’d never seen so many people from all walks of life crammed into such a small and strange-smelling area. In a few minutes, the show would begin. After the show, we were waiting outside, just watching everything unfold. Just standing there watching as all the people that had been at that circus with us left and were starting on their way home. Some drove, others walked, some teleported into another dimension, it was a nice experience. There were quite a lot of other mothers with baby prams of their own, each containing a tentacle beast that they loved because it was their very own tentacle beast. As the night drew to a close, I looked back on the show with a fondness in my heart. Although, as a vicious killing beast of the Zargon sector, I didn’t really understand the feeling at the time, that understanding would come later. The circus, or Circus, as it used to be called, was one of the ancient rites of our people, a celebration of death, an ode to killing. The participants in the circus performed their honourable duties with a smile on their face and a song in their heart. Such is the joy of our Circus.
