Ken Mehlman is the chairman of the Republican National Committee. He served as the campaign manager for George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign. He was Bush’s preference to succeed Ed Gillespie as the chair of the Republican National Committee. The American attorney was appointed to the post on January 19, 2005.

He previously served Bush as the White House Director of Political Affairs and as the field director for his 2000 campaign. Before joining President Bush, Mehlman was chief of staff to Congresswoman Kay Granger and legislative director to Congressman Lamar Smith. He practiced environmental law in Washington and assisted campaigns in Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia, Texas, and Georgia, as well as the 1992 and 1996 Presidential campaigns.

Ken Mehlman is a graduate of Harvard Law School. He received his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland to parents Judith A. Mehlman and Arthur S. Mehlman. He comes from a proud Jewish origin, a fact he noted in response to Howard Dean’s suggestion that the Republican Party was “pretty much a white Christian party.”
