BT Faces BPI’s Anger over Apathetic Approach towards Illegal File-Sharing

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) criticised service provider BT for its apathetic approach to online piracy, indicating that the latter is responsible for allowing close to 100,000 customers to download files illegally without implementing any restrictions.

The BPI has claimed that it has collected the details of personal IP addresses of people who are suspected of being involved in file-sharing. Refusing to elaborate on the source of its findings, the BPI accused BT of ignoring its responsibility to deal with the situation. While speaking to the Mirror, Geoff Taylor, chief executive of BPI, said that it was disgraceful for a company like BT to do nothing, though it knew that a high percentage of its traffic is used for illegal activities. He added that it is the responsibility of a commercial ISP to ensure lawful use of its services by customers.

A spokesman for BT however said that peer-to-peer applications used for file-sharing are not always used for illegal activity. It is also used to play online games like World of Warcraft. He added that investigating the exact nature of each case of default would involve a penetrative level of investigation and regulation of people’s traffic, which would compel the customers to complain.

BT has recently declared to Your Money Government that if it plans to deal with online piracy, its consumer broadband bills (see cheapest broadband) would soar by £24 a year.

Music Videos Set to Return to Youtube after Agreement Was Reached with Record Labels

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Premium music videos are coming back to YouTube’s UK website, after a licensing deal was agreed between Google and PRS for Music.

Google has reached a settlement with a British licensing group in a dispute over royalty payments, which means that YouTube’s U.K. outpost will begin showing licensed music videos again. The clips disappeared five months ago when YouTube and PRS for Music, the U.K. body that collects money on behalf of songwriters, couldn’t come to terms.

Google (GOOG) executives wouldn’t disclose how much they’re paying songwriters for the rights to play videos that feature their songs, but said they would be cutting PRS for Music a single check that covers the length of the deal. The new pact will extend through June 2012 and will retroactively stretch back to the beginning of this year.

Meanwhile, YouTube’s director of video partnerships Patrick Walker says that “We are dedicated to establishing and fostering relationships that make YouTube a place where existing fans and new audiences can discover their favourite content – whatever it might be. We are extremely pleased to have reached an agreement with PRS for Music and look forward to the return of premium music videos to YouTube in the UK where they will join a variety of other content to be enjoyed by our British users.”

The deal may provide a blueprint for resolving a similar dispute between the video site and a German rights society. But I’m not sure it will do much for the one Google is still (still!) stuck in with Warner Music Group (WMG).

MP3 Players – they’re so cool

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you’ll know that the most popular mp3 player in the world by far is Apple’s iPod. It comes in all sorts of editions, including the Mini, the Nano, and the Shuffle – and every single one is a best-seller.

What you might not have realised, though, is that Apple isn’t at all the only game in town when it comes to mp3 players. In fact, they’re quite a recent entrant into the market. Companies like iRiver and Creative have been around a lot longer, and their players are usually worth considering too, as they can often be cheaper than the equivalent iPod or have more features.

When you’re comparing the prices of mp3 players, the one feature you should look at more than any other is capacity. Don’t lose sight of the fact that a 40GB mp3 player can store twice as much as a 20GB one.

However, there other features to look for. Even though everyone calls them mp3 players, mp3s are not the only format you might want your player to be able to play – if you want to use it with Microsoft’s Media Player, for example, you’ll need a player that is also capable of playing wma (Windows Media Audio) format files. If you want to buy music from the iTunes Music Store, you need a player that can play aac (Apple) format files.

Another issue is battery life. Almost all mp3 players are now powered by mains chargers rather than by changing the battery, but battery life varies wildly, from as little as 2 hours up to as high as 10. Make sure you don’t get saddled with a player that won’t work for a long time if you want to use it for extended periods away from a power outlet.

Of course, the most important feature to many people will always be how their mp3 player looks when they’re using and wearing it. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but don’t be fooled into buying a turkey just because it has a pretty design
