The English language originated from dialects that were sent to Britain by an invasion of Germans. It started as Old English, which had several groups of dialects which reflected many Anglo-Saxon origins. One specific dialect, Late West Saxon, became the dominate dialect used.

The Roman Catholic Church played a huge role in the evolution of our English language: St. Benedict’s rule in 530 and the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536. The catholic church around the Middle Ages greatly influenced intelligence and the written language. For example, monks either copied or wrote text in the Latin language. Often, when they wrote in the vernacular they derived a lot of English words from Latin to relate to things where no English word was used. Most of the English vocabulary is comprised of Latin derivatives.

The British Empire further spread and emerged later on and the language is now currently being spoken in North America, India, Africa, Australia, and other countries. Once the U.S. emerged as a superpower, the language spread even further.

English is the dominant language in our world today and required for use by communications, business, science, aviation, entertainment, and radio. In today’s workforce, one is required to know how to speak the language in a number of fields and professions including medicine and computing. Almost two billion people all over the world speak the language at a basic level.
